We’re partnering with the New/Next Film Festival to host their Opening Night Party – a Bmore Music celebration featuring TT the Artist and Dapper Dan Midas Friday Aug. 18. 9 p.m. doors, 10:30 p.m. show. Tickets are only $15 for GA and $12 for WYPR/WTMD members, and even less when combined with the Opening Night Screening earlier that evening at The Charles Theatre.

The New/Next Film Festival, presented by 88.1 WYPR and taking place August 18-20, 2023 in Baltimore’s historic 5-screen Charles Theatre, announced an Opening Night Screening featuring the documentary Hummingbirds and an Opening Night Party at the Metro Gallery with Baltimore Club music stars Dapper Dan Midas and TT the Artist on Friday, Aug. 18.

Directed by Silvia Del Carmen Castaños and Estefanía “Beba” Contreras and set in Texas along the Mexican border, Hummingbirds follows best friends Silvia and Beba as they dance through long summer nights. Stuck in the immigration process in a politically divided America, home seems fragile. But their bond is not. The half-light is a space for poetry and dreams.

Hummingbirds screens at 7:15 p.m. Friday Aug. 18. A Q&A with Director Silvia Del Carmen Castanos, Producer and Co-Director Julia Schlessinger and Producer and Co-Director Miguel Drake-McLaughlin will follow the film.

After the Q&A, patrons can enjoy an hour of music and drinks across the street from The Charles in the Metro Gallery Lot, before heading indoors for a Baltimore Club dance party at The Metro Gallery with Dapper Dan Midas and TT the Artist. Doors open at 9 p.m. and the show starts at 10:30 p.m.

The Baltimore native made his name in the local rap scene establishing himself as a premier live act and songwriter. He has played shows nationally alongside the likes of Dan Deacon, Future Islands, Beach House, and Big Freedia. DDm’s ‘Secretary Of Shade’ YouTube channel, where he does live book readings and discusses politics and pop culture, has over 21,000 subscribers to date. He has been featured on Netflix, BET, and The Hill, and is considered a rising star in music and pop culture commentary.

TT The Artist is the rapper, artist, director whose work is an intersection of music, art, fashion, and film. Her bold and colorful visual storytelling is influenced by black cinema, sci fi, fantasy, dreams, and surrealism. As a director TT The Artist illuminates narratives that expand the representation of women of color, BIPOC, and LGBTQIA+ stories on screen. Rocking crowds with her fist pumping and high energy performances the self proclaimed Club Queen, has performed on national and global stages among artists such as Big Freedia, Peaches, Crystal Waters, Lil Uzi Vert, Teyana Taylor, Diplo and more.
